We do live music production for corporate events. Last week we were at the Milwaukee Marriott West. I’m going to tell you this story because it has a lot of similarities to what we do on a nightly basis.
Whenever I perform, whether as a solo pianist, a band leader or during our dueling pianos shows, we create an environment of camaraderie. We do our best to create a feeling of togetherness and unity that will carry over into the work place or the rest of the trade show or sales seminar. It is possible to do that. We have numerous team building games that are fun and easy to do.
So when I see another leader engaging in a very visible role as a team builder, I must comment on it. It always begins at the top. I’ve performed for corporations that really have their act together. Some companies are just downright ridiculous.
The Marriott was on top of things. We were doing an awards banquet for WICPA . It was our 2nd year in a row performing for their members. As we were loading in our gear, the difference from the previous year was astounding!
From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted by every hotel staff member we passed. When we went to run our electric line, we asked the maintenance man a question and he was helpful and courteous.
Such was not the case the year before. The janitor was irritated and short tempered. We wondered what the change was. Our question was quickly answered.
We saw the manager had assembled all the employees for some corporate team building – in the front lobby! He was rewarding them with team building games and prizes; gifts for those who answered procedural questions correctly. And everyone got a chance to join in and win!
It always begins at the top. And their leader was outgoing and pleasant. So it reflected on the rest of the staff.
